Five openings on school board

Seven candidates are seeking five open School Committee positions. Four will be elected to four-year terms. The fifth will complete the final two years of the term of Natalie Herbermann, who resigned in September.

Democrat Richard Angeli of 183 Kensington Court finished out the term of Anne Whaley, who resigned in 2007, and is running for his first full term. He is a pharmaceutical sales representative with three children in the district’s schools. He supports the investigation of shared services and consolidation between the district and the town and other districts.

“I have shown the ability to make difficult decisions during my tenure,” Angeli said. “I plan on continuing to make a difference for the families of South Kingstown.”

Frederick Frostic of 272 Rodman St., a Democrat, is a retired fighter pilot who served in the Clinton administration.

“I am excited and prepared to work with all the stakeholders to refine the strategy and objectives of the school system to meet the needs of all students, now and in the future,” Frostic said.

Incumbent Democrat Anthony Mega of 27 Steeple Bush Drive, who is now committee chairman, is a physician who is seeking his second term. He has two children in the school district.

“I hope the voters in South Kingstown believe that my proven leadership and commitment to excellent, educational programs for all children are valid reasons to re-elect me to the School Committee,” said Mega. “I truly enjoy my work as a committee member and wish to remain a part of a successful school system.”

Independent Elizabeth Morris of 174 Kenyon Ave. is a speech pathologist making her first run for School Committee. She has been an active volunteer, working with the South Kingstown Partnership for Prevention, the Special Education Local Advisory Group and the School Improvement Team at the high school. Two of her children graduated from South Kingstown High School and a third is a student there.

“My involvement with town organizations brought me to run for the School Committee,” Morris said. “It was time to take the next step up. Working with those organizations, and with Westerly school district students, I have a unique perspective on what is going on in the district and the direction it needs to take.”

S. Scott Mueller of 61 River Heights Drive is an incumbent Democrat seeking his fifth term. He is a professor at Rhode Island College. His two children are graduates of South Kingstown High School.

“We face extraordinary financial and educational challenges over the next four years,” Mueller said. “I have served on the South Kingstown School Committee for 16 years, have been elected as president of the Rhode Island Association of School Committees two times, served as a member of the Board of Directors of the National School Boards Association in Washington, D.C., for the past two years, and each has contributed to my preparation for these challenges.”

Republican Robert Petrucci of 11 Christopher St. is a loan officer and father of five. He is on the Board of Directors for the South County YMCA.

“I have a strong desire to unite the teachers, parents and students,” Petrucci said. “If we work together as a cohesive team, we can move mountains and create a better world for generations to come. Working together as an unstoppable force will produce the best students and the brightest young adults entering the work force.”

Independent Jonathan Pincince of 19 Sunset Blvd. is an attorney and father of four children between the ages of 1 and 12. The oldest three attend schools in the district.

“My wife and I, and our children, are heavily invested in the long-term health of South Kingstown and the excellence of its schools,” said Pincince. “I will work hard every day to see to it that we as a community give every child a world-class education, and I understand that we must do so in the most cost-effective manner possible in order to keep South Kingstown both a desirable and an affordable place to live.”
